Lot Essay

Designed in the ecclectic George II modern fashion as popularised by Thomas Chippendale's Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director (3 eds. 1754-62); the tea kettle-stand intended for a reception apartment/dressing-room, has its tripod-altar claw raised on bacchic lion paws, while its antique-fluted vase-baluster pillar is enwreathed by Roman foliage according to a 1759 Chippendale bed pattern (3rd ed. 1762 pl. 39). Its fretted octagon-compartment kettle-tray is railed in a gothic ribbon-guilloche as featured on another stand offered Sothebys London 6th June 2006, lot 270.
