Lot Essay

This model of table was commissioned by Winston and Clementine Churchill and designed by Ambrose Heal with the architect, Philip Tilden, for their new home at Chartwell,Kent in 1922. Said to have had notable influence over the design, Clementine Churchilll favoured practicality above antiquity when furnishing Chartwell, evident particularly in her choice of Heal's modern designs for the new Tilden-designed dining-room. Heal's then marketed the side-table commercially.
