2° (432 x 315mm). Lithographic title and four plates of the Evangelists, text within decorative border. (Slightly soiled throughout with wax drips, some minor tears, mostly marginal.) Contemporary purple cloth over wooden boards, the upper cover applied with a repoussé, chased and engraved silver plaque centred with the Risen Christ with the Evangelists at the corners, maker's mark with Cyrillic initials 'IA' for Ivan Alekseevich Alekseev, Moscow, 1882, the lower cover with a silver centrepiece of Golgotha with shaped cornerpieces (covers detached, cloth perished, damage to one cornerpiece on lower cover, lacks clasps).

A typical example of the Gospels intended for use on the altar of a Church. The silversmith Ivan Alekseev is recorded as the owner of a factory in 1876 producing covers for icons, bindings etc. until 1912.
