A CHINESE SILVER SNUFF BOX, BY LINCHONG, EARLY 19TH CENTURY
of small rectangular form with canted corners, decorated in relief with a man seated beneath a tree playing the weiqi surrounded by boys and men variously playing boistrous games, musical instruments and group activities, the interior decorated in silver gilt, impressed to the interior cover -- 2 7/8in. (7.2cm.) wide.

Lot Essay

The Hallmarked letter L is thought to stand for Linchong, a Canton Silvermith active for the first half of the 19th Century. For a similar box attributed to maker, see A.J. Marlowe, 'Chinese Export Silver'. p.54, no.39 and p.55, pl.39.
