Château Haut-Brion--Vintage 1952
Pessac (Graves), 1er cru classé
Bin-soiled labels. Levels: two top, three upper and one mid/upper-shoulder
Tasting note: This is definitively one of the best surviving. Seven notes in the 1960s and 1970s, the earlier ones good; later, despite its characteristic earthy Graves character, showing signs of cracking up. A nondescript note in 1987 but showing well at a recent Haut-Brion/La Mission tasting. Deeper than the '53; distinctive, slightly chocolatey, earthy bouquet which opened up well. Predictably tougher than the '53, with citrus like fruit, good flavour but very tannic. I thought it would go on and on. June 2000 **** M.B.
