Each with arched padded back and flat-fronted seat covered in crimson foliate silk damask, on panelled legs filled with Gothic fruitwood fretwork and husks, headed by pierced angle-brackets, the legs joined by pierced stretchers

Lot Essay

The fretwork on the legs of this pair of side chair is unusually executed in fruitwood, a soft and pale wood, making it easy to carve and providing a sharp colour contrast to the rich, dark mahogany of the leg. A suite of sixteen mahogany dining-chairs with richly-carved fretwork legs was supplied in the early 1760s to George Weller-Poley, Esq., Boxted Hall, Suffolk, probably by the Golden Square firm of Mayhew and Ince; sold by te Trustees of the J. H. Weller-Poley Will Trust, Christie's, London, 3 July 1997, lot 20.
