With William M. Murphy's The Yeats Family and the Pollexfens of Sligo (Dolmen Press, 1971; publisher's pictorial wrappers).

George Pollexfen (1839-1910) was the elder brother of Yeats' mother, Susan. The Pollexfens of Sligo were, in Murphy's words, 'a family of strange richness and depth ... [who] ... exercised, far more than the Yeatses, a profound influence' on William and his four siblings. The young poet forged a close and lasting friendship with his uncle in the early 1890s, based on their shared interest in occultism, and Yeats was a regular visitor to George's Sligo home during his early years in London. Murphy notes that 'Occasionally George served as first audience for his nephew's poetry', and he is commemorated as 'George, the astrologer' in Yeats' poem 'In Memory of Alfred Pollexfen', first collected in The Wild Swans at Coole (see lot 257).
