The basin shaped oval and with reeded rim, the basin helmet shaped on domed foot and with overall spiral fluting, each piece engraved with a coat-of-arms below a coronet, the basin marked on border, the ewer marked near rim
the ewer 8¾ in. (22 cm.) high
the basin 14¼ in. (36 cm.) wide
32 oz. (1,008 gr.)
The arms are those of Friedrich Wilhelm (1727-1789) Freiherr von Westphalen zu Fürstenberg, as Prince-Bishop of Hildesheim, near Hanover. (2)

Provenance
Friedrich Wilhelm, Prince-Bishop of Hildesheim (1727-1789) and by descent until 1825 when the some of the valuable household objects engraved with his arms were disposed of by the Hanoverian government and others, presumably including the present lot were retained, finally being sold in the first quarter of the 20th century by the Hanoverian Royal Family.
