Peter King was the grandson of the celebrated Lord Chancellor King (1669-1724) by his fourth son. Peter's father Thomas, 5th Baron King (1712-1779) had married Wilhemina Catherina (d.1784), the daughter of John Troye, a Judge of the Sovereign Council of Brabant, at the French Church in Delft in 1734. His wife brought a large dowry to the marriage and Thomas was a partner in a Dutch trading house. It is not surprising to record that Peter was born at The Hague in 1736, however, he was educated in England; first at Eton College and then Trinity College, Cambridge. In his politics he was a Whig but opposed the Coalition of 1783. In 1787 he was one of the peers who voted for the Regency Bill. He son was to follow him into politics. He died at the age of 67 and was buried at the family seat Ockham.
