MARK OF COLIN MCKENZIE, EDINBURGH, 1708, ASSAY MASTER'S MARK OF EDWARD PENMAN
Plain tapering cylindrical and on spreading foot, the scroll handle with applied rib, the hinged domed cover with baluster finial and corkscrew and foliate scroll thumbpiece, the body engraved with a coat-of-arms with earl's coronet above and crest beneath and later memorial inscription, marked under base, the cover apparently unmarked

39 oz. (1,243gr.)
The inscription reads 'JOHN EARL OF STRATHMORE Obiit Apr. 7 Anno 1776' for John, 9th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne (1737-1776). He was educated at Pembroke College Cambridge and married Mary Eleanor, only daughter and heiress of George Bowes, of Streatlam Castle and Gibside, Co Durham, in 1767.
