Born in 1937 in Morton, Minnestoa, Ken Carlson nurtured passions for both the outdoors and the fine arts from an early age. After demonstrating clear artistic ability during his teenage years, Carlson was accepted to the Minneapolis School of Fine Art. He quickly integrated the skills he gained there with his keen interest in wildlife, and began producing the commendable body of work for which he is known today.
After spending countless evenings at the zoo in Minneapolis sketching, Carlson began traveling throughout North America to observe and paint animals in their natural habitats. He has lived in Minnesota, California, Montana, and Texas; and made trips to Colorado, South Dakota, and the Canadian Rockies. Ken Carlson's commitment to wildlife as not only an artistic subject but a sincere passion is evidenced by the sensitive portrayal of both the creatures and their environments in his pictures. He has received multiple awards in recognition of his talent including the Frederick Remington Award for Artistic Merit (1999), and his work is represented in the collections of several museums such as the National Museum of Wildlife in Jackson, Wyoming.
