22 etched plates (with engraving) on 11 sheets of India paper, each mounted on heavy laid paper, mounts measure approximately 220 x 280 mm (some occasional scattered foxing). Loose as issued in modern cloth folding case.
COMPLETE SET OF PROOFS ON UNCUT INDIA SHEETS. This set with the engraved title-page to vol. 1 in second state, with the umlaut "a" in Märchen. Among Cruikshank's best work, the "etchings are seen at their best in the suites on special paper which were issued with a few copies of volume 1" (Ray). (Apparently unaware of the set of proofs for the plates in vol. 2, present here.)
VERY RARE: according to American Book Prices Current, only two other sets have sold at auction in the last 30 years: the Pforzheimer-Schaefer set (sale, Sotheby's London 14 Dec. 1988, lot 5; and Sotheby's New York 1 Nov. 1995, lot 72; respectively) and the Salomons - Auchincloss copy (Sotheby's New York, 13 Dec. 2000, lot 32). Cohn 369 note; Ray English 112 note (no. XXIV on his list of "One Hundred Outstanding Illustrated Books"). (11)
