2 parts in one, 2o (319 x 211 mm). Engraved title after R. Elstrac, Ben Johnson's poem "The Minde of the Front" facing title, 8 double-page engraved maps, ornamental initials, errata leaf at end (maps cropped with some occasional loss, most mounted on verso). (Small marginal repairs to a few leaves, slight occasional marginal dampstaining and browning.) Contemporary blind-stamped calf (rebacked, corners renewed, endpapers renewed, a little rubbed and dried). Provenance: Robert Norton Ganz (bookplate on front pastedown).

FIRST EDITION of Raleigh's ambitious project in which he sought to to tell the history of the world from Creation up to his own times. Written while he was imprisoned in the Tower of London after being charged with conspiracy by James I, Raleigh's chronicle was a tribute to his patron Prince Henry. STC 20637.
