A PAIR OF TURQUOISE-GROUND FAMILLE ROSE BOWLS
TONGZHI EARLY GUANGXU PERIOD (1862-1908)

Each with rounded sides rising to slightly flared rims, decorated in the famille rose palette with a bird perched on a wisteria branch, rising above herbaceous blossoming roses growing around the sides, inscribed in iron-red below the mouth rim with the characters, Dayazhai, beside the Tian Di Yi Jia Chun sealmark, all reserved on opaque turquoise-ground, the interior with a transparent glaze, further embellished with a narrow gilt band encircling the mouth rim and repeated above the ring foot, the base bearing the characters, Yong Qing Chang Chun in iron-red

Lot Essay

The draft of this pattern depicting a single bird, most probably a white-browed thrush, perched on a wisteria branch amidst roses is published in Guanyang Yuci, The Forbidden City Publishing House, 2007, p.206, p. 209. This design is also found on a number of vessels in the Palace Museum collection including jardinieres, zhadou, planters, tazzas, bowls, and a circular box, op. cit., pp. 207-209.
