A LARGE GILT-METAL AND ROCK CRYSTAL DISH
PROBABLY ITALIAN, MID 17TH CENTURY
Octagonal on four scrolling feet, with moulded border, the body repoussé and chased with foliage, shells, husks, flowers and central wreath, inset with rock crystal panels of various sizes and shapes, some engraved, each in moulded frame, with applied back plate

The engraving on the rock crystal is deliberately employed to cover flaws in the crystal. This practice was widespread in 16th and 17th century rock crystal carving.
