CHOPE EN ARGENT ET VERMEIL
ATTRIBUEE A HANS II MENT, AUGSBOURG, VERS 1590, APPAREMMENT SANS POINCON
Sur pied bâte à décor fondu de fruits et coquillages dans des cartouches, le corps en vermeil appliqué de six panneaux ajourés d'un décor à la Bérain, centrés de six Vénus en vermeil portant un miroir, dont deux en argent probablement plus tardives, séparées par des frises verticales en vermeil, l'anse en masque de lion surmonté d'une caryatide en enroulement, l'appuie-pouce double face en forme de femme assise, représentant probablement Judith tenant la tête de Holopherne, le couvercle à décor ajouré d'arabesques, la prise plus tardive en pomme de pin

A GERMAN PARCEL-GILT TANKARD
APPARENTLY UNMARKED, ATTRIBUTED TO HANS II MENT, AUGSBURG, CIRCA 1590
On spreading foot, with flat moulded border, chased above with a band of shells, strapwork and fruit within scroll cartouches, the gilded sides applied with six tapering rectangular silver panels of openwork scrolling foliage, four with applied gilt standing female figure, probably of Venus holding a mirror, the two panels either side of the handle with probably later silver figures, divided by a band of lobes and crosses, the cover with applied band of openwork scrolling foliage, and a replaced cone finial rising from flutes, the thumbpiece formed as a seated female figure, possibly that of Judith with the head of Holophernes, the handle cast and chased as a female caryatid figure above a lion's mask
This tankard can be attributed to Hans II Ment on the basis of a very similar hallmarked example in the Kunstgewerbemuseum in Berlin (inv. No Hz1190; illustrated in H. Seling, Die Kunst der Augsburger Goldschmiede 1529-1868, Munich, 1980, II, fig. 140).
