CHINA, QING DYNASTY, 18TH/19TH CENTURY

Each predominantly lacquered in red and gilt, decorated with floral scrolls in brown and green lacquer on the circular moulded top, the cabriole legs decorated with flowers and scrolls secured by a circular foot-stretcher ; small cracks, damages and small losses

Tables of this type are known as incense tables, primarily used to hold incense burners, although they also displayed planters and other objects. Compare the shape of the present pair of stands to two Ming dynasty lacquer censer tables, illustrated in Furniture of the Ming and Qing Dynasties (I) - The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum, Hong Kong 2002, pls. 165 and 166.

Les sellettes de ce style servaient à l'origine de supports pour de larges brûle-parfums mais aussi des jardinières ou d'autres objets.
La paire présentée ici est à rapprocher de deux autres exemples de sellettes en laque datant de la dynastie Ming et conservées au Musée du Palais de Pékin. Elles sont illustrées dans l'ouvrage intitulé Furniture of the Ming and Qing Dynasties (I) - The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum, Hong Kong 2002, pls. 165 and 166.
