Yves Saint Laurent's 'Smoking', or evening suit for women, was one of the great fashion landmarks of the last century, the shrewd expression by an extraordinarily intuitive designer of a major sea-change in the way women wished to dress. This ink and wash drawing perfectly captures the mood of this look, as radical in its day as the 'New Look' with which Saint Laurent's mentor Christian Dior had revived Paris couture in 1947.
