AN APULIAN RED-FIGURED COLUMN-KRATER
CIRCA 350-330 B.C.
The obverse with an Oscan youth and a draped female, the Oscan to the right, walking left, a situla in his extended right hand, a thyrsos in his left, wearing native Oscan dress including a short belted tunic and tight trousers, the female moving left and looking back, her hair bound in a kekryphalos, a box and fillet in her extended left hand, a thyrsos in her right, a rosette, a fillet, and a floral in the field; the reverse with two draped youths, two pairs of jumping weights, a writing tablet with stylus, and a fillet in the field; each side with a band of meander below the scene, framed on either side by double rows of dots, tongues on the shoulders, ivy vine and clusters of berries on the neck, a double row of dots on the edge of the rim, wave on the mouth, palmettes on the handle-plates, details in added white (now mostly lost)
