In 1955, 24 year old Genevan jewellery designer and artist Gilbert Albert joined Patek Philippe with the aim to produce a series of innovative and unusual wristwatches. Albert was inspired by his passion for modern sculpture, notably works by Brancusi and Mondrian. He broke away from traditional shapes, introducing asymmetrical triangles and rhomboid shapes into the design of watch cases.
The present watch, together with reference 3412 (see lot 131, Christie's Geneva Important Watches, 17 November 2008), is from Patek Philippe's celebrated "Ricochet" collection of asymmetrical watches. The models were only produced in small quantities, and never in series, most certainly due to the uncertain commercial success of his revolutionary design.
According to our research, the present reference 3413 is the 8th known example to appear in public to date.
