Lot Essay

The giant's head depicted on this piece is featured in the Russian folklore tale of Ruslan and Lyudmila, the subject of a famous poem by Aleksandr Pushkin, published in 1820. The giant was originally a mighty warrior, the brother of the wizard Chernomor.
