Lot Essay

Sir Hugo de Bathe, 5th Bt., who is recorded as having owned this portrait, is perhaps best known for having married the late Victorian beauty and actress Lillie Langtry (1853-1929) who was previously the mistress of Edward, Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII.

This portrait is thought likely to date from the late 1750s.
