Kronborg Castle, immortalised as Elsinore in Shakespeare's Hamlet, is situated near the town of Helsingor, on the extreme tip of Zeeland. The original building, which dated back to the 1420s, was rebuilt by Frederick II in 1585, and again by Christian IV in 1639, after a fire devastated much of the edifice. From 1739 until the mid-19th century, Kronborg was used as a prison, confining, in 1772, Queen Caroline Mathilde, sister of King George II of England.
