Lot Essay

The sitters were the two eldest sons of John, 2nd Marquess of Tweeddale. Charles married Susan, widow of the 2nd Earl of Dundonald, and daughter of Anne, Duchess of Hamilton by the 1st Earl of Selkirk, and was succeeded as 4th Marquess by his eldest son John. Lord John, the younger brother in the picture, served as a Brigadier-General in the War of Spanish Succession, and married first Lady Elizabeth Dalzell, only child of the 4th Earl of Carnwath, and second Elizabeth, daughter of Sir Thomas Orby, Bt.
