Lot Essay

The sitter was the daughter of Sir James Long, 5th Bt., Member of Parliament for Wiltshire, and his wife The Hon. Henrietta Greville, daughter of Fulke, Lord Brooke. The sitter's elder sister, Miss Doughty Long, was painted by Vanderbank in the same year, and the portrait was sold as the consecutive lot in the Christie's sale in November 1978.
