Lot Essay

Sold with a photo-certificate from Mrs. Marie-Lize Gall, dated Paris, le 1er septembre 2008 and is registered under no.449. This work will be included in the forthccoming catalogue raisonné of François Gall being prepared by the Comité François Gall.

This work depicts the artist's wife as painted from nature while the couple were living at 16 rue Dauphine, in front of the Pont Neuf. His fellow artist Albert Marqet, who also lived on the corner of rue Dauphine, had encouraged the young Gall to expolre the light and shade of 'la plus belle rue de Paris' [sic], and it remained a subject the artist returned to in all hours and seasons.
