Pauline-Jeannette Glashoff was born in Lübeck on 30 September 1780. She married Corneille-Guillaume de Chapeaurouge on 2 June 1798, the year the present miniature was probably painted. She gave birth to a girl, Jeanne, in 1800 and died on 21 March 1801, at the age of 20. Her widower remarried in 1807, to the Genevan Jeanne-Julie-Judith Bordier.
Pierre-Louis Bouvier left his hometown Geneva in 1797 to settle down in Hamburg and did not return to Geneva until 1801. Among Bouvier's most important clients were the trader Jacques de Chapeaurouge and his family and circle of friends, as in the present case.
