Lot Essay

A slightly smaller oval version from the same year 1833 is illustrated in J. Du Pasquier, Pierre-Edouard Dagoty 1775-1871 et la miniature bordelaise au XIXe siècle, Chartres, 1974, p. 146, no. 95.
Schönbeck was born in Danzig and went to Bordeaux as commis of the renowned wine-traders Schröder & Schÿler. During the French Revolution, he turned out to be so exceptionally competent that he became their associate. He owned Château Lubeck, at Le Bouscat, where he died aged 91.
