Jean-Baptiste Bernard Demay (1759-1848), maître in 1784.
Featuring semi-detached column supports and stiff-leaf carved chevets en enroulement, this elegant lit de repos by the menuisier Demay relates to a canapé à la turque acquired by the Comte Isaac de Camondo at the sale of Baron Léopold Double, Paris, 30 May-1 June 1881, lot 444 (ill. B.G.B. Pallot, Furniture Collections in the Louvre, vol. II, Dijon, 1993, pp. 148-9). A further related white-painted daybed possibly executed by Henri Jacob and formerly in the Christian Dior Collection was sold from the Lagerfeld Collection at Christie's, Monaco, 28-29 April 2000, lot 37.
Demay, who is chiefly remembered for his celebrated model of chaise en montgolfière is recorded to have worked for Marie-Antoinette, with further examples of his elegant Louis XVI productions now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris, and the Musée Carnavalet in Paris, as well as in the château de Versailles (P. Kjellberg, Le Mobilier Français du XVIIIème siècle, Paris, 1998, pp. 248-249).
