AN UNUSUAL FRENCH SILVER-GILT SMALL-SWORD, THE HILT INSET WITH OPENWORK PANELS OF SILVER WIRE
PARIS SILVER MARK FOR 1782
Silver maker's mark L+J over D, with slender blade of hollow-triangular section etched and gilt with rococo scrolls on a blued panel at the forte (small patches of light pitting), silver-gilt hilt finely cast and chased with a series of antique trophies-of-war within ovals set between beaded lines, including double shell-guard augmented by small acanthus sprays, pierced stylised fronds of palm and small grotesque masks, and the entire hilt inset with segmental openwork panels of close-set silver wire mesh (quillon removed)
