A RARE DALMATIAN SILVER-MOUNTED BROADSWORD
FIRST HALF OF THE 17TH CENTURY
With double-edged blade formed with parallel edges coming to a short point and cut with a full-length broad fuller on both sides, iron guard formed with a pair of forward-swept down-curved quillons with faceted terminals, silver pommel of characteristic type formed of two halves with punched engraved ornament radiating from a central silver rosette on both sides, and the grip retaining a portion of its original patterned wire binding between a pair of engraved silver collars (light pitting, the grip binding partly replaced)

Lot Essay

Swords of this type were used by the Slavic mercenaries of the Venetians (the predominantly Hungarian Schiavoni of Dalmatia) against Ottoman incursions throughout the 16th and 17th centuries.
