Lot Essay

John Nash was born in London in 1893 and educated at Wellington College. After a brief spell as a journalist, he was encouraged by his older brother, Paul Nash (1889-1946), to pursue a career as an artist. He exhibited from 1913, becoming a founder member of the London Group in 1914 and joined the Cumberland Market Group in 1915. He fought in World War I from 1916 to 1918 with the Artist's Rifles and in 1918 he became an official war artist.
