Lot Essay
This lot is sold with a copy of a letter written by Ken Howard to the present owner, dated September 2002,'I painted this painting circa 1998. Louise was the daughter of a friend I studied with at Hornsey but had lost touch with and Louise wrote asking if I needed a model. She worked for me for three or four months. The painting was made at 'Oriel', my studio in London. Like the original owner, Sir William Orpen (the main book on his life Mirror to an Age because of his interest in mirrors) I have always been interested in reflections and in fact my first painting exhibited in the Royal Academy in the early fifties was a mirror painting. When working in Northern Ireland as the Official War Artist many of the works I did were concerned with reflection in puddles, and many of my early city pictures were reflections in windows.
