Lot Essay
The term 'Arab' chest is used to describe brassbound and decorated hardwood chests found throughout the Gulf region and around the Indian Ocean where Arabs have settled and traded over the centuries. Though called 'Arab' the majority of chests were made in India. The present example is a Shiraz chest, indicated by elements of the chest's construction and design, whilst the free-standing polychrome painted feet suggest it originates from the Gujarat area. The brass studded decoration to the top behind the hasp and the particular type of combination lock on this example are signs of Hindu workmanship.
