Lot Essay

Rex Whistler studied under Henry Tonks at the Slade School of Fine Art, who, in later years commented to Sir Osbert Sitwell that in the course of his career, he had only encountered few individuals with a natural gift for drawing, and that Rex Whistler was one of those. The present drawing with its brevity of line and assured touch is a fine example of Whistler's draughtsmanship.
