Lot Essay

John Piper retrospectively signed the present lot on 10 February 1989 at Fawley Bottom Farmhouse. It was suggested then that the location of the work is Epsom. However, the ornate, lace-like style with which he has depicted the gables of the houses is more typical of his paintings of the Isle of Wight. The tower on the left is similar to one in West Cowes, and the palette echoes other works from his Isle of Wight series, such as Ventnor, Isle of Wight, sold in these rooms on 16 November 2007, lot 87 (for £26,900).

We are very grateful to the Revd Dr Stephen Laird for his assistance in cataloguing this lot.
