Lot Essay

The present unrecorded picture belongs to a group of Jardins du Luxembourg subjects produced by Bunny c.1909, for many of which numerous pencil sketches survive in the latter half of his Étaples sketchbook of c.1907 (Ian Potter Centre, University of Melbourne). The major highly finished work from the group, Au Jardin du Luxembourg, printemps 1909, was exhibited at the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, Paris in 1911. For a work with more stylistic affinities to the present picture, see Bunny's Luxembourg Gardens, c.1909, Christie's Melbourne, 27-28 April, 1998, lot 143.
