Lot Essay

The artist, a Pintupi woman from Haasts Bluff 200km west of Alice Springs, began painting at the Ikuntji Women's Centre in 1992-3. She paints her father's country called Uwalki in the Gibson Desert near the Kintore Ranges, west of Haasts Bluff. The country is characterised by red sandhills, bushes and trees including desert oaks, and her distinctive imagery derives from her mother's drawings in the sand: "My mother taught me my father's Tjukurrpa [Dreaming]; that's what I'm painting on the canvas".
