Lot Essay

The chairs have triumphal arched backs and Roman truss-scrolled pilaster legs, that terminate in wave-scrolled volutes. The latter are associated with the contemporary 'India' [Chinese] fashion, as recorded parlour chairs inventoried in 1717 at Canons Ashby, Northamptonshire (see A. Bowett, Some Chinese Influences on Early Georgian Furniture, Antique Collector, July 2007, pp.4-7, fig 7). Similar legs feature on an India caned chair in the National Museum of Ireland, that was formerly in the possession of the Rev. Henry Goldsmith, brother of Oliver Goldsmith (d.1774) (see The Knight of Glin and James Peill, Irish Furniture, London, 2007, p.206 fig. 8).
