Lot Essay

Sometimes referred to as a 'lambing' chair, which is probably based on a Romantic notion rather than on fact, this distinctive type of armchair with wings is peculiar to Lancashire and Yorkshire. They were almost certainly intended as comfortable fireside chairs for the head of the household.
