Lot Essay

The hall stool, with Grecian Ionic scrolled seat, is designed in the George III 'antique' fashion as popularised by a chair pattern in T. Sheraton's, Cabinet Dictionary, 1803, pl. 51. Thomas Chippendale supplied a mahogany stool to Christ Church Library, Oxford in 1764, see Chippendale Furniture, Anthony Coleridge, Faber & Faber, 1968, pl. 338. A similar stool was sold Christie's London, 15 September 2005, lot 59.
