Lot Essay

An ark was used for the storage of grain or meal and the lid would be loose enabling it to act as a kneading trough.
Similar arks are illustrated in Victor Chinnery, Oak Furniture, The British Tradition, Woodbridge, 1979, p. 357, fig 3.359 and in The Rous Lench Collection, Vol II, Sotheby's London, 3-4 July 1986, Lot 681.
