ALBERT CHEURET Sculpteur et Créateur de Mobilier Albert Cheuret, créateur incontournable de meubles et luminaires des années 1920-1930 Albert Cheuret saura, de façon très personnelle, représenter des animaux stylisés, des sujets naturalistes aux formes grâcieuses et puissantes, qu'il transpose dans ses matériaux favoris : le bronze patiné ou argenté mêlé à l'albâtre. Alors que ses oeuvres sont reconnaissables et très expressives -- faisant partie aujourd'hui de collections internantionales publiques et privées -- on ne sait que peu de choses sur lui. Né en 1884, il expose dès 1907 ses sculptures au Salon des Artistes Français dont font déjà partie toute une génération de sculpteurs tels Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux, Auguste Rodin ou encore Antoine Bourdelle. Talentueux, il se tourne très vite vers la création de mobilier. Ce sont ses luminaires, alliant bronze et albâtre, diffusant une lumière très douce, qui lui apporteront le succès. Lors de l'Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes à Paris, en 1925, il présente sur son stand toutes ses dernières réalisations, incluant appliques murales, plafonniers et quelques consoles, principales pièces recherchées aujourd'hui. Dans la collection d'Yves Saint Laurent et Pierre Bergé, il est intéressant de redécouvrir trois oeuvres essentielles qui expriment avec perfection toute la sensibilité de Cheuret. On peut d'abord admirer une élégante console (lot 285) au plateau de marbre noir supporté par trois cobras de taille réelle, dressés en majesté et dont les écailles de bronze argenté font reluire la surface. Un modèle similaire supportant un large miroir rectangulaire sera présenté à l'Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes de 1925 (voir illustration p. 188). Deux grandes lampes (lots 271 et 284) à motifs floraux sont aussi tout à fait exemplaires de son oeuvre. The signature of Albert Cheuret is to be found on a very distinctive range of furniture and lighting of the 1920s and 1930s. His particular skill was in the bold adaptation of stylised animal and plant subjects into simple, strong yet gracious forms, executed in his favoured materials -- silvered or patinated bronze and alabaster. While his work is impressive and immediately recognizable -- featuring in major international and private collections -- the man behind these creations remains elusive. Cheuret was born in 1884; in 1907 he was already exhibiting his sculpture at the Salon des Artistes Français, alongside celebrated artists of the generation of Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux, Auguste Rodin and Antoine Bourdelle. Cheuret was soon to apply his talent as a sculptor to furniture design and he showed a special flair in the creation of lamps and light fittings in which alabaster panels, often cut into the shapes of formalised leaves, served to gently diffuse the light. The historic 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris provided him with the opportunity to present a selection of his creations that included wall sconces, ceiling lights and consoles of the type that are so highly prized today. Within the collection of Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé we rediscover three exceptional pieces that perfectly express Cheuret's sensibility. Here is a dramatic and elegant console (lot 285), its stepped black marble top supported by three majestic, life-size rearing cobras, their scales subtly rendered in the finely chased surface of the bronze. A similar console with a large, angular mirror featured in Cheuret's 1925 exhibit (see illustration p. 188).
