A CARVED MARBLE FIGURE OF BACCHUS
FRENCH, LATE 18TH CENTURY
Depicted standing in contrapposto, with his right hand holding a cup aloft, wearing a crown of vine leaves in his hair and feeding grapes to a young satyr to his right side, on an integrally carved moulded oval base with tree-trunk support; damages, repairs and minor losses

The present marble figure is based upon the marble model of Bacchus dated circa 1514 by Jacopo Sansovino (1486-1570) now housed in the Museo Nazionale del Bargello, Florence (see B. Boucher, The Sculpture of Jacopo Sansovino, New Haven and London, 1991, II, figs. 36-37). The general pose of the Bacchus is identical and the young satyr differs in his positioning. In the present lot the satyr is standing and holding a tree-trunk, whereas Sansovino has the young satyr seated. The author of the present lot was presumably aware of Sansovino's marble sculpture and was inspired to create his own composition.

Le torse de cette figure en marbre est probablement Romain, circa Ier siècle avant J.-C au Ier siècle après J.-C. It has been suggested that the torso of this marble figure is probably Roman, circa 1st century BC to 1st century AD.

Lot Essay

Cette figure en marbre s'inspire du modèle en marbre de Bacchus datant de 1514 par Jacopo Sansovino (1486-1570) aujourd'hui conservé au Musée National du Bargello à Florence (voir B. Boucher, The Sculpture of Jacopo Sansovino, New Haven et Londres, 1991, II, figs. 36-37). La pose générale de Bacchus est ici identique, à l'inverse de celle du jeune satyre. Dans le groupe ici présent, le satyre se tient debout près d'un tronc d'arbre, tandis que dans la composition de Sansovino le jeune satyre est assis. L'auteur de ce groupe connaissait sans doute la sculpture en marbre de Sansovino, et s'en est fortement inspiré afin de créer sa propre composition.
