TWO CIRCULAR PARCEL-GILT POLYCHROME ENAMEL PLAQUES DEPICTING HECTOR AND GODEFROY ON HORSE BACK
ATTRIBUTED TO COULY NOUAILHER, MID 16TH CENTURY
Each depicted on horseback, and described in gilt around the edge, respectively, 'HECTOR DE TROYE' and 'GODEFROY. DE. BLIHON', the former also monogrammed with 'A' and the latter 'I'; each in a later ebonised moulded wood frame

These roundels once formed part of the collection of the Margraves of Baden, and were produced as part of a set of Nine Worthies. These Worthies, highly admired in the Middles Ages and frequently reproduced by Limoges enamellers, were meant to embody all the best qualities of chivalrous behaviour (for a more detailed discussion of the Nine Worthies see also note to lot 546).

The attribution of the present enamels to Nouailher is based upon their close stylistic comparison to other enamels of Worthies also attributed to his hand. Examples of Julius Caesar and Joshua exist in the Louvre (see Baratte, loc. cit.), as well as four that recently entered the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (published in 'Recent Acquisitions 1992-93', The Metropolitan Museum of Art Bulletin, Fall 1993, p. 31). Another pair, representing Roland and Godefroy de Bouillon, were sold from the collection of the Earl of Rosebery in 1977 (Sotheby's, London, 18 May 1977, lot 1115).

Lot Essay

Ces plaques circulaires, provenant de l'ancienne collection des Margraves de Baden, furent exécutées pour une série représentant Les Neuf Preux. Ces Preux, très admirés au Moyen-âge et souvent reproduits par les émailleurs de Limoges, incarnaient en effet les qualités les plus admirables de la chevalerie (pour plus d'information sur Les Neuf Preux, voir également la notice du lot 546).

L'attribution des présents émaux à Nouailher est fondée sur les similitudes stylistiques que ceux-ci présentent avec d'autres émaux représentant des Preux, émaux qui lui sont également attribués. Certaines versions représentant Jules César et Josué sont conservées au Musée du Louvre (voir Baratte, loc. cit.), tandis que quatre autres ont récemment été acquises par le Metropolitan Museum of Art, à New York (illustrées dans Recent Acquisitions 1992-93, The Metropolitan Museum of Art Bulletin, Fall 1993, p. 31). Une autre paire représentant Roland et Godefroy de Bouillon est passée en vente en 1977, 'Collection du Comte de Rosebery' (Sotheby's, Londres, le 18 mai 1977, lot 1115).
