A PARCEL-GILT POLYCHROME GILT-METAL-MOUNTED ENAMEL MONSTRANCE
VENETIAN, CIRCA 1500
Surmounted by a cross and domed upper section, the body with four gilt-bronze colonettes and glass sleeve, above a stem with central knop and a spreading circular foot; minor wear to gilding, damages and restorations

Of all the Venetian enamelled items in this collection perhaps the rarest of all is the monstrance offered here. Not only is it significant for its scale and condition, but also for the fact that it is probably one of only a very small number of similar items still in existence. The other comparable examples found to date are a considerably smaller monstrance sold in the Ernest Brummer collection by Galerie Koller, Zurich, 16-19 Oct. 1979, lot 263, and a closely similar example in the Walters Art Gallery, Baltimore (Verdier, loc. cit.).

Lot Essay

De tous les émaux vénitiens de cette collection, le présent ostensoir constitue sans doute la pièce la plus rare. Non seulement celui-ci est-il remarquable en termes de proportions et d'état de conservation, mais il représente probablement également l'une des très rares pièces de ce type ayant survécu. Parmi les exemples comparables connus à ce jour citons un ostensoir beaucoup plus petit, vendu dans la Collection Ernest Brummer par la Galerie Koller, à Zurich, les 16-19 octobre, 1979, lot 263, ainsi qu'un exemple très proche à la Walters Art Gallery, à Baltimore (Verdier, loc. cit.).
