Lot Essay
W.R. Sargent illustrates a nearly idential pair in the Peabody Essex Museum (The Copeland Collection, p. 63) and notes the influence of the Chinese horse model on European ceramics and then on Japanese porcelain, writing that the type "...has a monumentality and individuality matched by few other animal sculptures". Other examples include the pairs in the collection of H.R.H. The Duke of Gloucester, sold Christie's, London, 20 May 1954, lot 12 and in the collection of Mrs. Warwick Bryant, sold Christie's, London, 26 October 1955, lot 81.
