D.S. Howard (Chinese Armorial Porcelain, vol I., p. 177 and vol. II, p. 134), notes that the owners of these two services must have been political and social acquaintances. Somers was Attorney General, Lord Keeper and then Lord Chancellor, while Dr. William Walker of Hertfordshire, was a Doctor of Laws and Judge Advocate. No one knows how the Walker crest ended up on the Somers service, but it is surmised that the orders were sent out to China together.
