Lot Essay

The present eagle motif finds its origins in the 1802-05 masthead of Newport's Rhode-Island Republican newspaper. For another punch bowl with this same Newport eagle owned by John Jay (1745-1829) and gifted to the Diplomatic Receiption Rooms, U.S. Department of State by George P. Morse, see J. McClure Mudge, Chinese Export Porcelain in North America, New York, 1986, p. 217, no. 355.
