Lot Essay

A chair in a private collection with nearly identical volute carving on the crest rail and handholds as well as matching turnings on the legs and arm supports is described as a "masterpiece of its period and of its type" by Charles Santore (Charles Santore, The Windsor Style in America, vol. 2 (Philadelphia, 1987), fig. 16, p. 52). Another related chair is in the collection of Winterthur Museum (Nancy Goyne Evans, American Windsor Chairs (Winterthur, Delaware, 1996), p. 90, fig. 3.21).
